Pronouns: reflexive pronouns

Overview

We use reflexive pronouns when the object of the subject is the same as the subject. When we use the reflexive pronoun with by (e.g. by myself, by himself etc) it means 'alone'.

Pronoun Reflexive Pronoun
I myself
you (singular) yourself
he himself
she herself
it itself
we ourselves
you (plural) yourselves
they themselves

Note: the singular reflexive pronouns end in -elf whereas the plural pronouns end in -elves.

Examples:

  • I booked the plane tickets myself - it was easier than asking somebody else to do it.
  • He managed to learn Portuguese by himself. He didn't need a teacher.
  • If you want a cooked breakfast, you can do it yourself.
