Adverbs: adjective | adverb

Questions
Overview

Sometimes we can turn an adjective (describes things) into an adverb (describes how things happen). In many cases, we can add '-ly' to an adjective to form an adverb:

  • This song is beautiful. (adjective; describes the song) Anna sings beautifully. (adverb; describes how she sings)

  • The bus is too slow. We're going slowly.

Form

  • When an adjective ends in 'e', we simply add 'ly' (e.g. extreme - extremely).
  • When an adjective ends in 'y', we change the 'y' to 'ily' (e.g. happy - happily).
  • When an adjective ends in 'le', we change the 'le' to 'ly' (e.g. horrible - horribly).
