Adjectives: superlatives

Simple superlative

With one syllable adjectives, we make the superlative by adding -est to the end of the adjective.

  • The oldest person in the world lives in Japan. (old)
  • That was the hardest exam I have ever done. (hard)
Compound superlative

With adjectives that have two or more syllables, we make the superlative by adding most before the adjective.

  • This document is the most important one for tomorrow’s meeting.
